And indeed in order to achieve such a light weight, the tent has to be small and compact, and while our Skylar serves its purpose adequately in that it is a perfectly waterproof shelter to sleep in, internal space is at a premium. So, if you are over 6ft or have a large frame and like a spacious tent with room to move about and stretch your arms out, then this tent is really not for you. Perhaps look at our much roomier 1.3 kg Whisper tent instead. I should also add that this tent can be a little tricky to pitch just right, not least because the inner tent and flysheet share 5 pegging points. The flysheet pegging points are on guyline runners, so adjustable, but a little patience is required to get tensions just right in order to have a nice taut outer flysheet without the inner sagging too much, which is one reason why would suggest that this is a tent for the more experienced camper. If however you are looking to move up from the confines of a bivvy bag, then our Skylar tent could be absolutely ideal as, though its a small and compact tent, it still provides far more space than any bivvy bag can, and for very little (if any) weight increase. The Skylar is yet another lightweight solo tent to complement our other one and two person tents, with the main priority of this tent being its ultra-lightweight. The nylon bug mesh inner tent is erected first, with the short bottom pole located in its dedicated top and bottom metal eyelets, and with a walking pole inserted into the pocket at the apex we suggest an initial height of 125cm. Ground level to top of handle. Two of the guylines are required to hold up the inner tent at this point – one at the foot end, the other attached to the strap below the walking pole pocket at the head end. The outer flysheet is then draped over the inner tent and pegged out accordingly, with five of the pegging points doubling up with the inner tent floor pegging points. If you usually backpack and hike with walking poles, then the big plus with the PYRAMID tent is that there is a substantial weight-saving to be had from using your own walking poles as tent poles. The 1 person PYRAMID tent has the same 210cm x 90cm floor plan as the TOPWIND 1 tents that we also supply, however it does feel somewhat less spacious inside due to the shallow sloping sides resulting from the simple A-frame set up. The floor length is just OK for myself at 5’11″, but due to the shallower angle of the sides the PYRAMID tent may seem a little short for anyone over 5’11″, moreso if using a very thick inflatable mattress. Cause of the shallower sloping sides of the PYRAMID tent w e thought that there could potentially be a problem with the head and feet of taller people pushing the inner tent onto the flysheet when lying down, however this is not an issue due to the great amount of space between the inner tent and the flysheet near ground level. But please do bear in mind that the characteristic triangular cross section of the inner tent means that the mesh fabric is closer to your face than the TOPWIND 1 inner tent when lying down. The PYRAMID is a specialist lightweight tent, and it will not suit everyone, but may certainly be more problematic for taller people. The inner tent height at its highest point in the middle is 105cm. Apart from the 55D PU-coated polyester bathtub floor, the inner tent is made completely from fine, high density no-see-um bug mesh. The all mesh inner tent will mean that this tent will be potentially colder and draughtier than tents such as our TOPWIND 1 tent that features a full polyester inner – something worth bearing in mind if you intend to use the tent in colder months or tend to sleep cold yourself. All seams are taped to provide a fully waterproof seal at the stitching. All seams are double-stitched and reinforced with box stitching at any potential stress points. There are pitching instructions sewn into the compression stuff sack, though it is unlikely that you will need them. Two walking poles are required to erect this tent, that said, the flysheet or the inner tent can be used independently if required, and if using the flysheet on its own, then either one or two walking poles can be used. This tent is a specialist 1 person tent for people wanting a high quality, high performance ultralight tent that is not only incredibly practical, but light enough to carry for hours on end when backpacking. Please note that this tent is aimed primarily at experienced backpackers who want – or need – to shave off the grams, and may not be particularly suitable for novice or first time backpackers. This tent may also be of particular interest for anyone considering moving up from the confines of a bivvy bag. A good Goretex, breathable bivvy bag will weigh around the 850 gram mark and probably set you back a small fortune. For around an extra 300 grams weight penalty you could have the relative luxury of a tent. Granted, the weight of walking poles do have to be taken into consideration, but if you do already walk with poles then this point is moot. Erecting the PYRAMID tent. Initially we only connected the two side guylines, and even with just the two pegged out the tent seemed very stable, we couldn’t imagine the tent going anywhere very fast if you pegged out all six guylines and 16 tent pegs! The two air vents on the side of the flysheet are both held open by the side guylines. We played about a little with this until we realised that you can close up the vent by simply running the guyline attached to the top of the vent through the loop on the lower vent material (though with a little thought other methods can be used). When we only had the two side guylines pegged out we found that the lower material of the air vents sagged very close or even onto the mesh inner tent, which we did not like at all and indeed this did concern us. However, this rectified itself once we had attached and pegged out the remaining four corner guylines. This immediately pulled taut the lower air vent material and instantly resolved the issue. With our walking poles set at 120cm length (top of the pole handles to the cup above the spike) the PYRAMID is quick and easy to set up. If you don’t know where the 120cm setting is on your walking poles, we would suggest marking them to take away any guesswork and making setting up quicker. This does two things: firstly it tensions the inner tent a little more, and secondly it slightly raises the flysheet from the ground, which when pegged evenly allows for better ventilation. But this is something that you can adjust to suit yourself and indeed weather conditions. Please note that the manufacturers have now updated this tent to feature two main entrances, however, this also added 250 grams to the total gross weight. So, as we see no real necessity for two large entrances. On this particular 1 person tent, we opted for the original one entrance, lighter flysheet. However, we did also opt for the new version of the inner tent which features two doors and corner uprights on the bathtub floor which help raise the floor and better tension the inner tent. You are probably thinking,’Why two inner tent doors when there is only one flysheet entrance? Well, having two doors on the inner tent allows access to useful storage space underneath the flysheet on both sides – half the space of which would otherwise be inaccessible with only one inner tent door. The two storage areas combined provide enough space for a rucksack, boots, etc. The PYRAMID tent is quick and easy to erect, but it is worth having a couple of practice runs before you use it out in the wilds in order to get the feel of pegging out the fly. With the four corners of the inner tent floor pegged out, the inner tent will self support once your walking pole handles have been located in the special material sleeves at the top. It is then simply a matter of throwing over the flysheet and pegging out accordingly. We found it easier to rough peg initially, and then adjust each flysheet peg to provide a taut, nice even shape. The standard V-shape aluminium tent pegs weigh 10 grams each, whereas the 150mm x 3mm Superlite titanium shepherd’s crook tent pegs weigh just 6 grams each. The titanium shepherd’s crook tent pegs would reduce the total weight by a further 64 grams if anyone feels the need to further lighten the load. See our other listing. Indeed if you are looking to compare this tent with other tents (and, I know I would), then compare it to the big brand name, very expensive tents and you will find the specifications of this tent are right up there with them… But the price is not! The real beauty of the Topwind 1 is actually its simplicity. There is nothing complicated, nothing counter-intuitive, nothing you have to think about. The tent erects very fast and very straight forward in just a few short minutes. This tent has two large entrances, one either side, with inner tent doors that feature both full breathable polyester and no-see-um mesh, so the tent is very versatile when it comes to ventilation and air flow. This little tent features quality 8mm, ProFlex 7001-T6 aluminium alloy tent poles; these tent poles are shock-corded, strong and flexible, and anodised for even greater corrosion resistance. Please note: Should you. STATION13 – GeerTop TOPWIND 1 Review. I have to start by saying, we love this tent. Even on just taking it out of the box it looks the part and exudes quality. A very nice waterproof compression stuff sack with a quick-release buckle roll top also features a handy carry strap. In use the TOPWIND 1 erects incredibly quickly and easily, taking only a few minutes, and it feels truly spacious for a small one man tent. In fact we have seen so-called two man tents that seem to have less space than this lovely little tent. Now, we know the specs of the materials are good, we also know the build quality is good, but what we did not know until today was just how easy it is to erect: lay down the inner tent on the ground, and after sliding the alloy tent pole sections together, carefully feed them through the mesh sleeves, slot the pole ends into the dedicated eyelets on the four floor corner straps and the inner tent is immediately up and free-standing. Peg the inner tent down at the four corners, drape the flysheet over the top and clip it to the inner tent buckles and the tent is up. An absolute dream to erect. Once the flysheet is pegged out the tent is ready to use. Please note that the mesh pole sleeves travel for most of the length of the inner tent. We like this because it holds the shape of the inner tent much better than tents with just a couple of clips or ties that can allow the inner tent to sag in areas. The full length mesh sleeves of the TOPWIND 1 completely eliminates sagging areas and hence gives the tent a much roomier feel. There are ties on the inner of the flysheet to secure it to the poles, this stops the flysheet moving out of alignment with the poles if it’s a bit blowy. The TOPWIND 1 is free-standing once the poles are inserted – you can the pull the inner tent slightly tighter as you peg it down. The two aluminium alloy poles do a good job of providing ample internal space and the crossing poles form a very stable framework. The angle of the alloy poles means that the inner tent does not come down too shallow at the head, foot or sides, so even though the floor is only 90cm wide it does not feel at all cramped. The TOPWIND 1 is nice and bright and does feel deceptively big and airy for a one person tent. In feet and inches I’m 5’11″ and the length was extremely good for me, with around 6 inches to spare, so it should certainly comfortably accommodate someone up to around 6’3″/6’4. The inner tent is primarily breathable polyester fabric, with two mesh triangles right in the middle at the top to allow air flow. The inner tent, like the flysheet, has a large entrance either side, and what is nice is that each door is a double door – that is, each door has both a full polyester fabric AND a mesh door. Hence you can either open just the polyester door and leave the bug net door closed, open both or leave both closed – great for both air circulation and heat control, and indeed privacy. Although the full polyester inner does make the TOPWIND1 marginally heavier, it also makes for a considerably warmer tent than tents featuring full no-see-um bug mesh inner tents. There are also two vents at the top of the flysheet that can be propped open. Our tent only weighs 1.846kgs, and that is including all the various bags, pegs, guy ropes and very nice compression stuff sack complete with strap handle. Of course, for the minimalist backpacker, the overall trail weight can be reduced further by removing all the bags, straps, compression stuff sack, etc. This tent is available in either yellow or red, and while some people may prefer a more subdued colour, I personally like a nice bright, cheerful interior to my tent, it makes it feel bigger and less claustrophobic. Unless you are discreet camping or wild camping whereby an olive green tent or one of our a camouflage tents. Would better suit your needs, from a safety point of view, bright coloured tents can effectively be life savers. Should you ever suffer a mishap when up a mountain or out in the wilds, you can always use your brightly coloured tent to attract the attention of potential rescuers – worth bearing in mind! This really is a cracking little one person tent, and all in all we feel that this tent is going to be a very hard tent to better in this weight/price range. IMPORTANT : The tents that we supply are genuine GeerTop Tents, made of high quality materials and manufactured to the specifications detailed. However, we should point out that there are other manufacturers in China that copy designs but use inferior materials and cut corners on construction and labour (there appears to be no laws against this in China). For example, we have seen numerous outwardly identical versions of the TOPWIND 1 advertised, that you could easily be fooled into thinking is the exact same tent, but at a far better price… Things are not always as they seem, and on closer inspection you will find cost-cutting is evident and indeed is the reason for the seemingly better value – you will not actually be getting better value, rather you will be getting a cheaper tent for a reason. I have used a lot of tents and my experience with the NatureHike Cloud UP 2 (which i used for a year in all weather, including snow in -25°c) is that the materials and manufacture stand up against tents of 3x the price! While this means that the Backpacker can be pitched in places too small for the TOPWIND 1 or PYRAMID tents, this does also mean that there is not any practical storage space for a rucksack inside the tent underneath the flysheet. While this is unlikely to be a problem for the minimalist camper who only carries a small to medium size backpack which can be taken inside the tent itself, larger people with very large packs might find it a bit tight and prefer to leave their pack outside under a rain cover. That said, this tent is actually quite spacious, with a very decent size floor plan for a lightweight one man tent, and t here is certainly space inside to sleep with your pack inside with you. And, from my experience on a 10-day camping trip in Wales, I would say a modern rucksack of a. Round 50 litres would be comfortable to sleep with inside the tent. Perhaps not ideal, but I managed! And of course, the most important thing when backpacking, is weight, and this little tent only weighs 1.54kg! The PYRAMID is an ultralight tent weighing in at just 1.2kg. The great difference between the PYRAMID tent and the other tents that we supply is the fact that the PYRAMID tent has no dedicated tent poles and is designed to be used with your own two walking/trekking poles. This does mean that the PYRAMID tent, without any tent poles, provides a substantially smaller, lighter package. The PYRAMID employs a flysheet of 20D 360T silicone-coated, ripstop PU nylon with fully taped seams and a hydrostatic head of 3000mm. The sewn-in bathtub floor employs a 55D PU-coated, waterproof polyester with a hydrostatic head of 5000mm. The PYRAMID tent comes with no less than 16 very nice, anodised V-section aluminium tent pegs (similar to those used on Hilleberg tents) and 6 guylines. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS TENT. IMPORTANT: Please be aware that the reinforced sleeves that the poles are inserted into on the inner tent are only designed for standard upright hand grips, so walking poles with horizontal grips or Pacer Poles, will not fit into the sleeves without making some modifications. The weight breaks down in the following way. Outer flysheet: 498 grams. Inner tent: 464 grams. 16 x Aluminium tent pegs and 6 x guylines: 216 grams. Total with the carry bags: 1.22kgs. PYRAMID Tent with Aluminium Tent Pegs. The standard V-section aluminium tent pegs weigh 10 grams each, whereas the 150mm x 3mm Superlite titanium shepherd’s crook tent pegs weigh just 5 grams each. I should just add though that, unlike the cheap and nasty, cost-cutting tent pegs packed as standard with many small tents, the V-section, anodised aluminium tent pegs that come with our PYRAMID tent are themselves of a very high quality. All modern lightweight tents feature a lightweight flooring fabric, and though it can be made extremely waterproof, it is much less resilient, hence much more prone to damage by sharp implements – thorns, stones, etc. Than the thicker, heavier materials employed by tents of old. I always use my polythene emergency survival bag as an additional groundsheet, and for this purpose it works extremely well. However if I did not have this, for peace of mind, I would surely employ an additional lightweight groundsheet for the extra protection it would offer to my lightweight tent floor. STATION13 Review – GeerTop PYRAMID. If you usually backpack and hike with walking poles, then the big plus with the PYRAMID tent is that there is a substantial weight-saving to be had from using your own walking poles as tent poles. The one person PYRAMID tent has the same 210cm x 90cm floor plan as the TOPWIND 1 tents that we also supply, however it does feel somewhat less spacious inside due to the shallow sloping sides resulting from effectively the simple A-frame set up. The floor length is just OK for myself at 5’11″, but due to the shallower angle of the sides the PYRAMID tent may feel a little short for anyone over 5’10″, more so if using a very thick inflatable mattress. Cause of the shallower sloping sides of the PYRAMID tent w e thought that there could potentially be a problem with the head and feet of taller people pushing the inner tent onto the flysheet when lying down, however while the feet of taller people might push onto the inner tent, the great amount of space between the inner tent and the flysheet near ground level means that the two are never likely to actually touch. But please do bear in mind that the characteristic triangular cross section of the inner tent means that the mesh fabric is closer to your face than the TOPWIND 1 inner tent when lying down. The PYRAMID is a specialist lightweight tent that will not suit everyone, and will certainly be more problematic for taller people. The inner tent height at its highest point in the middle is 105cm. Apart from the 55D PU-coated polyester bathtub floor, the inner tent is made completely from fine, high density no-see-um bug mesh. The all mesh inner tent will mean that this tent will be potentially colder and draughtier than tents such as our TOPWIND 1 tent that features a full polyester inner – something worth bearing in mind if you intend to use the tent in colder months or tend to sleep cold yourself. All seams are taped to provide a fully waterproof seal at the stitching. All seams are double-stitched and reinforced with box stitching at any potential stress points. There are pitching instructions sewn into the compression stuff sack. Two walking poles are required to erect this tent, that said, the flysheet or the inner tent can be used independently if required, and if using the flysheet on its own, then either one or two walking poles can be used. This tent is a specialist one person tent for people wanting a high quality, high performance ultralight tent that is not only incredibly practical, but light enough to carry for hours on end when backpacking. Please note that this tent is aimed primarily at experienced backpackers who want – or need – to shave off the grams, and may not be particularly suitable for novice or first time backpackers. This tent may be of particular interest for anyone considering moving up from the confines of a bivvy bag. A good Goretex, breathable bivvy bag will weigh around the 850 gram mark and probably set you back a small fortune. For around an extra 300 grams weight penalty you could have the relative luxury of a tent. Granted, the weight of walking poles do have to be taken into consideration, but if you do already walk with poles then this point is moot. Erecting the PYRAMID tent. Initially we only connected the two side guylines, and even with just the two pegged out, the tent seemed very stable, we couldn’t imagine the tent going anywhere very fast if you pegged out all six guylines and 16 tent pegs! The two air vents on the side of the flysheet are both held open by the side guylines. We played about a little with this until we realised that you can close up the vent by simply running the guyline attached to the top of the vent through the loop on the lower vent material (though with a little thought other methods can be used). When we only had the two side guylines pegged out we found that the lower material of the air vents sagged very close or even onto the mesh inner tent, which we did not like at all, and indeed this did concern us. However, this rectified itself immediately once we had attached and pegged out the remaining four corner guylines. This naturally pulled taut the lower air vent material and instantly resolved the issue. With our walking poles set at 120cm length (top of the pole handles to the cup above the spike) the PYRAMID is quick and easy to set up. If you don’t know where the 120cm setting is on your walking poles, we would suggest marking them to take away any guesswork and making setting up quicker. This does two things: firstly it tensions the inner tent a little more, and secondly it slightly raises the flysheet from the ground, which when pegged evenly allows for better ventilation. But this is something that you can adjust to suit yourself and indeed weather conditions. Please note that the manufacturers have now updated this tent to feature two main entrances, however, this also added 250 grams to the total gross weight. So, as we see no real necessity for two. Large entrances on this particular one person tent, we opted for the original one entrance, lighter flysheet. However, we did also opt for the new version of the inner tent which features two doors and corner uprights on the bathtub floor which help raise the floor and better tension the inner tent. You are probably thinking,’Why two inner tent doors when there is only one flysheet entrance? Well, having two doors on the inner tent allows access to useful storage space underneath the flysheet on both sides – half the space of which would otherwise be inaccessible with only one inner tent door. The two storage areas combined provide enough space for a rucksack, boots, etc. Once you’ve done it a few times, the PYRAMID tent is quick and easy to erect. With the four corners of the inner tent floor pegged out, the inner tent will self support once your walking pole handles have been located in their material sleeves at the top. It is then simply a matter of throwing over the flysheet and pegging out accordingly. We found it easier to rough peg initially, and then adjust each flysheet peg to provide a taut, nice even shape. 150mm x 3mm, 6g titanium tent pegs would reduce the total weight by a further 64 grams if anyone feels the need to further lighten the load.
